The market town of Kenmare Next Photo
A further 10km away is the delightful market town of Kenmare - winner of the 2008 fiercely contested Tidy Towns competition. Here also the colourful buildings cheer up the dullest day. Market day is on Wednesday and there are sheep and cattle markets. Clothes, craft and gift shops offer visitors a good variety and there are three excellent book shops, or the Post Office which stocks maps and guide books. You will be spoilt for choice about where to eat in the many pubs and restaurants. Kenmare holds a Walking Festival in May. Live music is to be found in many of the pubs and hotels in Kenmare and Killarney too. The helpful Tourist Information Centre can tell you all about attractions in surrounding areas and the many nearby historical sites, including a stone circle right in the town. They also have plenty of good quality gifts and books. Above the Tourist Information Centre is the Kenmare Lace Museum where you can hear how it came to be made in Kenmare and see lace making demonstrations.
